One of the bigger moves of the offseason went down last week when the Los Angeles Dodgers shipped outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig to Cincinnati.
Prior to that, however, new Met Robinson Cano tried to get the front office to pull the trigger for Puig, according to AM 570 LA Sports on Twitter.
According to their insider, David Vassegh, at the winter meetings he heard that Cano wanted the Mets to trade for the slugger.
“A very interesting person texted me today saying that Robinson Cano is trying to persuade the Mets to make a trade for Yasiel Puig. So we will see where that goes if anywhere,” Vassegh said.
It’s unclear whether the Mets made a formal offer to the Dodgers, but Puig was ultimately traded to Cincinnati, who were able to dump long time starter Homer Bailey in the process.
Puig, 28, can become a free agent in 2020. The former All-Star owned a triple slash of .267/.327/.494 over 444 plate appearances in 2018.
As for the Mets, they are still looking for an outfielder, so it’ll be interesting to see if they do wind up going the trade route or if they decide to pull the trigger on someone like A.J. Pollock.
