New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters on Saturday that third baseman David Wright is “progressing nicely” in his push towards a rehab assignment.

Wright, 35, has been rehabbing from neck surgery in 2016 to repair a herniated disk in his neck. Wright tried his hand at a rehab assignment in August of 2017, but he suffered a setback and has not been close to an assignment since.

Playing in a rehab game will be a big test for Wright as Callaway described, “He’s doing good. He’s plugging along. Obviously still has a long way to go. I think the real challenge is going to be at some point when he actually has to play in some games.”

Wright has been doing baseball activities for weeks including taking ground balls at third and batting practice.

The 35-year-old Wright hasn’t played in a major league game since 2016. He’s a career .296/.376/.491 hitter in 5996 games with the Mets.
