This is the fifth installment and final installment of the first-half report cards for the New York Mets where we will focus on coaching staff and front office.

On Monday, John Flanigan covered the outfielders.

Tuesday, Jack Hendon had the difficult task of looking at the Mets bullpen.

On Wednesday, Justin Boniello covered the infielders and catchers while Jack Ramsey touched on the starting pitchers.

Sandy Alderson – It’s been a turbulent season for the Mets GM, he’s had to step down because of health and turn over the reigns to the combo of John Ricco, Omar Minaya and J.P. Ricciardi. Very few things went right for the Mets during the offseason and they are headed for their second straight disastrous season. While the farm system is beginning to recover, the Mets are certainly going to have a hard time competing in the short-term and a lot of that responsbility has to fall on Alderson (which he acknowledged in his presser).

Grade: F

Mickey Callaway – Tough to fully judge a manager that was given a faulty roster and is forced to choose from players that belong on a major league roster. With that being said, Callaway’s decision making and reasoning behind said decisions has been extremely poor. The first-year manager will have an important second half as the Mets hope to evaluate players for the 2019 season (let’s hope they finally decide to do that, see Jeff McNeil).

Grade: D

Dave Eiland – The veteran pitching coach was brought in to help a Mets pitching staff that was horrendous in 2017. While the bullpen has still been bad (4.73 ERA in 2018 compared to 4.82 in 2018), there has been significant improvement from the rotation (4.00 ERA in 2018 compared to 5.14 ERA in 2017). Team ERA has dropped from 5.01 last season to 4.29 this year, which is supported by an improvement in K/BB, HR/9, WHIP and soft contact. Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz are having bounce back seasons this year, health wise and performance on the mound.

Grade: C+

Pat Roessler – With Kevin Long leaving the Mets to head to the rival Washington Nationals, Roessler was elevated to hitting coach after being the assistant for three years. Again, it’s tough to get an exact feel for the skills of a coach when they simply have bad players like Jose Reyes and Adrian Gonzalez getting significant at-bats and Jay Bruce‘s offense falling off a cliff. But, the Mets offense has been brutal in 2018 with a 89 wRC+ (23rd) following a 100 wRC+ season in 2017. One of the Mets biggest offensive issues this year has been hitting with men on base, their .680 OPS in that situation ranks 28th in baseball.
