Mickey Callaway said today that the Mets are going to give Amed Rosario a “mental break” today and tomorrow to “work on some things.”
Meanwhile, Jose Reyes will play the next two games in place of the 22-year old struggling shortstop as the team is enthused by his play in the month of June.
The 35-year old is 6-for-20 (.300) with six walks and one RBI. That is a dramatic difference from what his overall season stat line looks like as he is hitting .180/.270/.247 with only one home run and four RBI this season.
Rosario has only two hits in his last 11 at-bats and while that is a small sample size, the shortstop just doesn’t get on-base at a high clip as he only has two walks in the month of June and eight on the season. That has helped lead him to have a .246/.272/.363 slash line with four home runs, 21 RBI, and 54 strikeouts in 240 at-bats.
His defense has been even more disappointing, though, as he has -6 DRS and a -2 UZR in 594 innings at the shortstop position this season.
Considering the Mets thought Rosario was going to be close to the second coming of Andrelton Simmons defensively, that is a major discouragement and nothing close to their expectations of him.
Nonetheless, the team will hope the mental break can help him come back fresh and ready to go and Rosario thinks that these next two days will give him time to “relax and enjoy the game again.”
