According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets have discussed releasing Jose Reyes.
However, the team is currently conflicted about the idea of doing so because of Reyes’ roots in the organization and they want to give the former All-Star a nice sendoff.
Based on his performance this season, it makes perfect sense for the team to release Reyes, and has for a while. On the year, Reyes is hitting .141/.208/.197 with only one home run and three RBI in 77 plate appearances. He also has an atrocious 16 wRC+ and -0.9 WAR on the year.
He also has -4 DRS in the field between second base (0), shortstop (-2), and third base (-2).
However, over the course of Reyes’ Mets career, which spanned 2003-2011 and 2016-present, the 34-year old has a .284/.336/.435 slash line with 105 home runs, 508 RBI, 405 SB, 1,501 hits in 5,280 at-bats.
