Alderson: “We’ve Done More Than 80 Percent of Teams”

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson spoke to fans on Thursday saying, “We have done more than probably 80 percent of the teams in the game.”

Fans were lined up to watch as the Mets equipment truck was getting ready to leave Citi Field and head to Port St. Lucie. Pitchers and catchers report to the PSL on Feb. 12 with the first workout two days later.

Up to this point this offseason the Mets have signed right-handed reliever Anthony Swarzak to a two-year deal, brought back outfielder Jay Bruce for three years, picked up infielder Asdrubal Cabrera‘s option for 2018, signed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the league minimum major league deal, brought back Jose Reyes for one year and traded lefty reliever Josh Smoker for lefty relief prospect Daniel Zamora.

The Mets still need an infielder with the primary focus being on Todd Frazier, Eduardo Nunez, Neil Walker and Josh Harrison. They also need another reliever, more precisely a lefty with Jerry Blevins the only one currently on the 40-man roster. It would be smart if they added a reliable starter though they haven’t been active (to our knowledge) in that market at all yet.

It’s been an unusual free agent market that still holds most of the top players including Yu Darvish, Eric Hosmer, J.D. Martinez, Mike Moustakas, Lance Lynn, Greg Holland and Jake Arrieta.

Now Feb. 1 and the market still hasn’t budged which could benefit the Mets as they wait out deals, but will they capitalize on that opportunity?
