The New York Mets (63-81) were defeated by the Chicago Cubs (78-66) by a score of 8-3 Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
Pitching:
Robert Gsellman toed the rubber for the Mets in the loss and was ineffective over four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits, while walking five and striking out four.
Each of the Mets relievers to follow Gsellman surrendered a run, including a relief appearance by Chris Flexen who walked two and struck out two in his lone inning of work.
Jacob Rhame appeared in his third big league game and allowed a run scoring single to Ben Zobrist after Javier Baez doubled.
Offense:
The Mets scattered three runs and seven hits in this one. Travis Taijeron gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead in the fourth before the Cubs answered back with four of their own.
Travis d’Arnaud hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but went 0-for-3 out of the cleanup spot.
In the ninth inning, the Mets were threatening as they loaded the bases, but couldn’t surmount the hole the pitching staff left them in.
Third baseman of 2018, Asdrubal Cabrera, went 3-for-5 out of the three hole for New York and Amed Rosario collected two base knocks out of the seven spot.
On deck:
The Mets trudge on and face the Cubs in game two tomorrow night with Matt Harvey (5-4, 5.82 ERA) squaring off against Jon Lester (10-7, 4.35 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.
