The Mets dropped the first game of the Subway Series on Monday, and would you believe me if I told you it had nothing to do with Rafael Montero?

Montero allowed just two runs over six innings and besides the fourth inning where he nearly melted down, he looked like the pitcher that we thought he would be several years ago. It was a good outing for Montero and, I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’m looking forward to his next start to see if this was a blip or the start of something for him. Tonight’s game has the best pitching match up of the series, as Jacob deGrom goes against one of the newest Yankees, Sonny Gray.

The Mets are 0-1 in this year’s version of the Subway Series. The Mets went 2-2 vs. the Yankees last year, including going 1-1 at Yankee Stadium. The Mets are 9-13 all-time vs. the Yankees at the new Yankee Stadium and 22-33 all-time vs. the Bombers in the Bronx. The Mets are 10-9 vs. the Yankees
since 2013. The Mets are 8-13 vs. the Yanks at Citi Field and 24-30 during the regular season in Queens.

Jacob deGrom is 13-5 over 23 games and 151 1/3 innings with a 3.21 ERA, 3.53 FIP and 1.143 WHIP. After a poor (for him) start against the Dodgers at the beginning of August, he rebounded against the Phillies shutting them out in Philly over 6 2/3 innings allowing four hits and no walks while striking out nine. He left the start early after being hit with a come back line drive. Last year, he shutout the Yankees over seven innings allowing four hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Jacob deGrom is 10-3 in 16 starts this season that followed a Mets loss. The 10 wins ties him with the Marlins’ José Ureña (10-5 in 18 starts) for the most wins following a team loss for any starting pitcher this season.

The Yankees have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Ellsbury 2-for-9, 2B, HR
  • Gardner 2-for-8
  • T. Frazier 1-for-5, HR
  • Gregorius 0-for-5
  • Headley 1-for-5
  • Hicks 1-for-3

The Mets bats will get a look at Sonny Gray who is 6-7 over 18 games and 109 innings with a 3.39 ERA, 3.19 FIP and 1.183 WHIP. This will be his third start as a Yankee. In his previous starts, he has allowed eight hits and seven runs (four earned) over 12.0 innings. He missed the Mets when the Athletics and the Amazin’s met up earlier this season. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Cabrera 2-for-8, HR, 2 BB
  • Reyes 1-for-10
  • Cespedes 1-for-3

NOTES:

The last time the Mets won the season series between the two clubs was in 2013, when they went 4-0 vs. the Yankees. The last time the Mets lost the season series to the Yankees was in 2015, going 2-4.

Yoenis Cespedes has homered in three consecutive games (August 11-12 and August 14). It is the fourth time in his career he’s gone deep in three straight games three times, last, Sept. 1-4, 2015. Cespedes has never homered in four consecutive games. The last Met to hit a homer in four straight games was Curtis Granderson, Sept. 4-9, 2016.

Curtis Granderson has three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored in his last five games. He has 10 RBI in his last 35 at-bats. Of his 94 career home runs with the Mets, 49 have given the club a lead or tied the game (52 percent).

Jacob deGrom is 9-2 with a 1.82 ERA (16 earned runs/79.1 innings) and 85 strikeouts in his last 11 starts. DeGrom tied the single-season franchise record for wins in consecutive starts with eight from June 12-July 24. He is tied for sixth in the majors with 13 wins. He ranks 11th in the majors with a 3.21 ERA.
