The New York Mets (24-31) were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates (26-31) by a score of 11-1 Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

Pitching

Tyler Pill made his third Major League start and was hurt by both the Pirates bats and his teammates’ defense. He allowed five runs, only three of which were earned, on eight hits and no walks, striking out four.

Paul Sewald was the only Mets pitcher that emerged unscathed, pitching a scoreless sixth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Josh Edgin was tasked with the 7th inning. With a runner on first and one out, he induced a tailor-made double play ball which the Mets turned in plenty of time. After coming back from commercial, everybody was surprised to see the Mets returning to the field after the Pirates had challenged the call on the field. It turns out that Neil Walker didn’t touch second base with the ball in his glove, despite the runner being out by 30 feet.

The umpires didn’t go to the replay video until after God Bless America was finished so as not to be disrespectful. The result was an irate Mets team that had to deal with a runner on second base with two outs. Of course, as would make sense considering the season so far, David Freese singled to right field to score the run from second.

Neil Ramirez came in to preserve a 6-1 deficit and couldn’t. He allowed two base hits and a four-pitch walk to load the bases with nobody out. He ended up allowing two runs in the inning.

Josh Smoker was tasked with the top of the 9th inning and was wounded by an Andrew McCutchen three-run home run to give the Pirates the 11-1 lead they would eventually finish the game with.

Offense

The Mets grounded into four double plays today which accurately sums up the game.

Michael Conforto led off the first inning with an opposite-field double but the Mets weren’t able to bring him around. He ended up going 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Mets lone run came in the second inning when Wilmer Flores led off with a double. Curtis Granderson then singled to move Flores to third, who scored when Travis d’Arnaud grounded into a double play. Flores finished 2-for-4 and Granderson finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

Jay Bruce had the only other hits in the game as he went 2-for-4 with a strikeout.

On Deck

The Mets are off tomorrow and will travel to Texas where they will begin a series with the Rangers. Jacob deGrom (4-2, 3.97 ERA) will try and bounce back from his worst start of the season against the Rangers and Nick Martinez (1-3, 5.24 ERA).
