As the Chicago White Sox presumably continue their fire sale, the Mets could have some interest in closer David Robertson according to Marc Carig of Newsday.

While it seems unlikely given the Mets current payroll, a source told Carig that the Mets have not ruled out exploring a trade for Robertson.

Robertson, 31, is coming off a down year in 2016 in which he had his worst BB/9 (4.6) since 2011, highest ERA (3.47) since 2010 and tied his career worst FIP at 3.58. He did pick up 37 saves and still struck out 75 batters in 62.1 innings.

Since becoming a closer in 2014, Robertson has a 110 saves with a 3.32 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Over those 190 innings he has struck out 257, walked 68 and only allowed 144 hits.

One of the obvious obstacles to acquiring the right-hander is that he’s making $25 million over the next two seasons. Not to mention the price of closers on the trade market right now.

He has a limited five team no-trade clause that includes the Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies.
