It’s that time of the year when we start seeing publications release their top prospects list and the first one this offseason is by Baseball Prospectus.
Mets Top 10 Prospects (preseason rankings in parentheses):
1. Amed Rosario, SS (2)
2. Robert Gsellman, RHP (9)
3. Thomas Szapucki, LHP (NA)
4. Dominic Smith, 1B (5)
5. Desmond Lindsay, OF (7)
6. Justin Dunn, RHP (NA)
7. Andres Gimenez, SS (NA)
8. Brandon Nimmo, OF (6)
9. Gavin Cecchini, SS (4)
10. Wuilmer Becerra, OF (8)
Players that dropped out of the preseason list: Steven Matz (1st) is prospect eligible, infielder Luis Carpio dropped out (3rd) after missing most of the year with an injury, and catcher Ali Sanchez (10th) struggled offensively with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The biggest surprise for me on this list is that Smith not being ranked second which I believe will be the consensus among most publications. Tough to argue with the seasons that both Gsellman and Szapucki had though. Gsellman saw increased velocity that helped him in his big league stint and Szpaucki was the breakout star among Mets prospects.
Overall, the list is a good combination of guys like Gsellman, Nimmo, and Cecchini that made their major league debuts in 2016 and young raw talent like Gimenez and Dunn who only have one year of professional baseball under their belt.
