Update – Aug 2

The Mets announced that Juan Lagares underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair the torn ligament in his left thumb. Team doctors say it will be a six-week recovery before Lagares can resume baseball activities.

The Mets signed Justin Ruggiano to a major league deal to replace Lagares on Saturday, but he pulled up lame on Monday night with a strained hamstring and was placed on the DL today. Ty Kelly was called up to replace him.

Update – July 29

As expected, outfielder Juan Lagares has been placed on the disabled list and will undergo surgery to repair the partially torn ligament in his left thumb.

Lagares is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, so there’s a good chance he will return late this season, barring any setbacks.

As first reported by MMO’s own Michael Mayer, the Las Vegas 51s removed Brandon Nimmo from the lineup tonight as he is flying to New York to join the Mets for tomorrow’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

The move means Juan Lagares will likely be placed on the disabled list, as the thumb injury has flared up once again, but the Mets have not yet made an official announcement.

Lagares has been battling a partially torn ligament in his left thumb. He has been playing through the pain since June 6, when he tore the ligament diving for a ball in the outfield. He now appears headed for season-ending surgery.

After a DL stint meant to help avoid surgery, Lagares has hit just .170/.278/.319 in 56 trips to the plate.

Nimmo gives the Mets another option in center field. In his prior call-up, he hit .235/.291/.294 with one homer and four RBI in 16 games.
