The New York Mets (52-46) were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals (53-46) by a score of 3-2 this afternoon at Citi Field in game one of the doubleheader.
Pitching:
Noah Syndergaard got the ball for the first game of the doubleheader this afternoon at Citi Field, and turned in a decent outing, going six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking three.
Syndergaard struck out three in the first, but surrendered the first run of the game in the second.
After three straight singles, Syndergaard’s opposite number, Carlos Martinez, dribbled one up the third base line. Syndergaard attempted to get the out at home but his throw couldn’t be handled by Rene Rivera, scoring Yadier Molina.
In the third inning, after Matt Adams walked, Jedd Gyorko hit a moon shot to left field to give St. Louis an early 3-0 lead, which would provide to be the difference maker in the game.
Hansel Robles, Jerry Blevins, and Erik Goeddel pitched the seventh, eighth and ninth respectively and kept St. Louis at bay, but it wouldn’t matter much as the Mets offense was for the most part silent yet again.

Offense:
The Mets were able to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, when Rene Rivera hit his fourth homer of the year after Asdrubal Cabrera had been hit by a pitch.
The Mets had multiple opportunities to score, as per usual, but left 11 runners on base throughout the game, and were 0-for-5 with RISP.
In the ninth inning, Curtis Granderson singled, but was quickly doubled off as the veteran outfielder tried to tag up on a long fly out.
Well that’s that. Let’s take game two…
On deck:
Stay tuned for the second half of the doubleheader which will be starting shortly on SNY. Bartolo Colon (8-5, 3.48 ERA) toes the rubber for the Amazin’s and is opposed by Jaime Garcia (7-6, 3.98 ERA). First pitch will be twenty minutes after the final out of game one.
