Freddie Freeman once again crushed the Mets hopes with an excellent performance during last night’s loss to Atlanta. He delivered the key hit of the game with a three run shot against Jeurys Familia to break the game’s 3-3 tie in the 9th inning.
Nobody was expecting Freeman to make such an impact because he started the game on the bench due to a sore wrist. However, it did not seem to bother him at all as he drove in five runs after coming in the game in the 7th inning and delivering a pinch hit two-run double.
“Freddie has been a thorn in our side,” Wright said. “I wasn’t expecting to see him. He came in and single-handedly beat us. I didn’t want to look at him [on the homer]. I was already disgusted.” (Greg Logan, Newsday)
“He comes off the bench and kills us again. So I’ll be glad to get rid of him. Freddie came in and singlehandedly beat us tonight. That’s why he is who he is. It just seems like he elevates his game against us.”
Wright appeared to have shouted expletives at him as he rounded the bases, but the Mets’ captain told reporters after the game that it was all in good fun.
Freeman has clearly established himself as one of the top Mets’ killers in all of baseball. His 15 home runs against the Mets since 2012 are tied for the most in the league with Giancarlo Stanton, and his 61 RBI are the most of any opposing player in this span. The next highest is Ryan Howard with 48 RBI.
His walk-off home run against Dillon Gee in June of 2013 still stands out as one his biggest moment against the Mets, but this one ranks right up there too. The good news for the Mets is that they won’t have to face him again this year, and they will quickly put this game behind them as they continue to inch closer to the playoffs.
