The Mets (30-27) fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks (27-28) by a score of 2-1 tonight at Chase Field.
Pitching:
How many times have we seen this before? A pitcher tosses a brilliant game, and ends up the loser. Bartolo Colon was the latest victim, as the only blemish of his night was a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning off the bat of Welington Castillo.
His final line has him going seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out seven. He gets the tough luck loss and falls to 8-4 on the season.
Alex Torres, Hansel Robles, and Jack Leathersich kept the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard in the eighth inning to keep the Mets in the game, but it would turn out to be fruitless, as a two run lead turned out to be insurmountable yet again.
Offense:
The lone run the Mets scored came off the bat of Juan Lagares in the second inning, where he hit an opposite field home run.
Despite allowing eight hits, Chase Anderson limited the damage and held the Mets at bay after Lagares’ home run.
The Mets had opportunities to potentially give Colon some flexibility by scoring a few runs, but could never convert, as they grounded into four double plays, and had the bases loaded in the sixth, and runners at first and second in the ninth but failed to score.
Some positives to take out of the loss are that Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-4 tonight and continued his hot hitting, and Eric Campbell after his 0-for-28 skid that ended last night also went 2-for-4.
Regardless, the Mets offense is anemic and needs to be improved, and now. It is a blessing that on June 7th, we are only a half game out of first place, but the once respectable record has shrunk to us being only three games over .500, which could very much see us being .500 in the next few days.
On deck:
Jacob deGrom (6-4, 2.41 ERA) looks to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow and give us the series split. He will be opposed by Josh Collmenter (3-5, 5.03 ERA). First pitch is at 4:10 PM.
