Adam Rubin of ESPN New York is reporting that the Mets are optimistic that David Wright can begin baseball activities on Monday.

Wright was shutdown before the weekend because of lower back pain. He was prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and rest after an MRI showed no structural damage.

The Mets said that Wright’s original hamstring injury has healed and if not for the back issue he was scheduled to begin playing in rehab games this weekend.

The Mets third baseman has been out since going on the disabled list April 15.

The Mets announced that David Wright is now suffering from lower-back pain as he attempts to rehab and return from his hamstring injury and he has been shutdown.

The team said that the hamstring is doing very well, and this is something new.

Wright was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Thursday, where he underwent an MRI that came back clean and showed no structural damage.

He will be shutdown until the pain in his lower-back subsides and after that he will resume baseball activities.

David Wright’s expected return was pushed back from this week to next week as he continues to recover from the strained right hamstring he suffered early in the season that landed him on the DL.

This week he will run the bases and could play in a Minor League game as early as this weekend, according to Mets manager Terry Collins.

Wright was aiming for his return this weekday vs the Orioles on Tuesday night. But it is now pushed back a week later. The Mets are being careful with Wright and want to make sure he is 100% physically ready, especially after missing 78 games the past 2 seasons.

There is no specific date for Wright’s return but Collins said that David is making progress and that he was “very upbeat.”

“Certainly he felt better today than at any other time in his rehab process,” said Collins. “He’s moving in the right direction now. He’s starting to speed things up, and that’s a good sign.”

Meanwhile Adam Rubin of ESPN New York quoted general manager Sandy Alderson who said the team still doesn’t expect to have Wright back in its lineup for at least another week to 10 days.

“I’m happy that he was positive,” Alderson said. “I don’t think that changes the estimate.”
