mets win beat phillies

3 up

1. The Mets continue to own the Phillies in Citizens Bank Park. They have come away victorious in 12 of their last 14 outings at CBP, winning three out of four in this set. Overall, the Mets are 11-5 against the Phillies this season, however just 16-19 against the rest of the NL East.

2. Juan Lagares is swinging a hot bat in the month of August and didn’t let up in Philly. The young center fielder batted .385 in the series and continued to flash more power, hitting two doubles and a triple, while also scoring three runs and plating three RBI’s. Also, a memo to all opposing third base coaches, please continue to test our boy Juan’s arm. He has a cannon and he’s not afraid to use it. Talking to you Domonic Brown

3. Jon Niese and Dillon Gee got back to form. Gee allowed one run, three hits and three walks over seven innings. Going into his start on Saturday, he owned a 9.56 ERA at Citizens Bank Park, but bucked the trend nicely. Niese collected his first win since June 8th, also going seven innings, surrendering two runs, five hits and three walks with six K’s.

3 down

1. Jenrry Mejia and Jacob deGrom are injured. Mejia, who blew his third save in 20 attempts in Sunday, has a torn hernia. He does intend to “take some pills and keep pitching”, but that doesn’t give me much confidence in his health or the competence of the Mets training staff. Jacob deGrom was diagnosed with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder and is now on the 15 day disabled list. Prior to the injury, deGrom was 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA and making a string bid for NL Rookie of the Year.

2. This should have been a series sweep, but Game 3 should have easily been a W. The Mets led in the ninth, 6-5, but Collins signaled to Mejia to intentionally walked Chase Utley (already in a 3-2 count) after Marlon Byrd got into into scoring position and swiped second. Ryan Howard, who Collins intended go after as the final out, made the skipper pay by ripping a slider from Mejia down the right field line and plating the winning run.

3. David Wright has a 10 game hitting streak, which is a good sign, but there’s still no power. Over that stretch, Wright has 1 double, zero triples, zero home runs and only 2 walks compared to 8 strikeouts. He needs to find his power stroke before the year ends, it’ll be crucial to the team’s hunt for the playoffs in 2015.
