2023 Review

Luis Guillorme had his most productive campaign as a big leaguer (excluding the 60-game season) in 2022, hitting .273 with a .351 on-base percentage in a career-high 335 plate appearances. The expectation was that he would continue to be the New York Mets Swiss Army knife, playing a combination of second base, third base and shortstop when Francisco Lindor needed a day off. Guillorme proved to be that in the early stages of the season, as he hit .244 with a .623 OPS across 11 starts in the month of April.

A few weeks into May, the team was put into a position where they wanted to call-up Mark Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse. That required a corresponding move, one that would force the organization to option another player. Guillorme would be sacrificed, and he would never really recover. The 29-year-old returned to the big leagues to slash .316/.381/.684 in June, although he had a total of 21 plate appearances across 10 appearances. Guillorme needed to build off of that, but an injury in July shut him down.

He went on the injured list with a right calf strain on July 22, an injury he suffered in a game against the Boston Red Sox. The infielder would go on a rehab assignment before returning to the big league team in late September. Guillorme was unable to contribute in a big way to end the season, going 0-for-6 in his last two starts. He had some good moments throughout the year, but overall, it was a down season when you consider the levels he has hit in the past. Sure, it is difficult to find a rhythm when you are not in the lineup every day, but Guillorme has been effective as a part-time player for a number of years now.

2024 Overview

The Mets non-tendered Guillorme on Friday night instead of guaranteeing him a contract for the 2024 season. He is now a free agent for the first time.

Non-tendered players do re-sign with the original club at times on minor league deals or for less than what they were expected to make in arbitration, but I would expect Guillorme to hope for an opportunity with more playing time. If he’s unable to find that, the Mets are the only organization the smooth fielder has been a part of, and they could link up for a lesser deal.
