2016 Player Review:
Could Addison Reed have been any better in 2016? He pitched in almost half the Mets’ games, third in baseball with 80 appearances. He led all of baseball with 40 holds. He pitched to a 1.97 ERA and more often than not his innings were fairly uneventful as he had a minuscule .940 WHIP.
Simply put, Reed was the best setup relievers in the game. He was remarkably consistent. Right-handers hit .208 against him, but if the opposing manager sent up a left-handed pinch hitter, they hit just .203 against him. Reed did not give up an earned run in May or July. Before the All Star break he pitched to a 2.16 ERA, and remarkably he improved on that, pitching to a 1.75 ERA after the break.
Some were dubious when Sandy Alderson offered Reed arbitration after a mediocre 2015 season. However, he made the doubters look as foolish as he did opposing batters. Reed gave the Mets the perfect bridge to Familia and the ninth inning. He played with passion and intensity. Without his late inning consistent success the Mets do not make the playoffs in 2016.

2017 Outlook:
Could he maintain this level of excellence? A little return to the mean might be expected, but his remarkable consistency bodes well for future success. The Mets also need to see how Familia’s recent alleged battery charge plays out; if he is suspended Reed might be expected to shift to the closer role for a period of time.
