The Mets are tossing around the idea of turning Justin Turner into an outfielder beginning next spring. That means two things basically; a hearty welcome back to Turner in 2013, and a pre-order for an extra case of Alka Seltzer for me.
As is usually the case with our lovable losers, Turner has never played outfield in his major league career. But given his ability to rise to the occasion more often than not with ducks on the pond, how bad can he in left field? Todd Hundley bad? Lucas Duda bad? Daniel Murphy bad?
It seems like every time the Mets need an outfielder, Plan A is to pick the worst defensive infielder and buy him an outfielders glove. It’s a time-tested plan for the New York Mets which has worked wonders for them in the past. Right?
And speaking of Lucas Duda, the Mets are also saying they’re not at all happy with how their former lumbering outfielder is swinging the lumber up in Triple-A Buffalo.
In 62 at-bats over 16 games with Triple-A Buffalo, Duda is hitting .258 with two home runs and six RBI, although he is 6 for his last 19 over his last five games.
Gee, I wish they got that alarmed when Ike Davis and Jason Bay were batting .170 in June. But all you Lucas Duda lovers out there, don’t worry. Ready or not, he’ll be back at a rotunda near you in the next two weeks.
