“I thought yesterday was pretty good. This was amazing. You keep going back to the word resiliency. This team never feels like it is out of a game. Teams give us an opportunity and leave the door open a little bit and we pounce and take advantage.” –– David Wright

With a six run seventh inning, the New York Mets cut a 7-1 deficit  en route to an 8-7 victory over the division rival Washington Nationals.  The Mets have a six game lead in the National League East division race with their magic number set at 19.

Here are ten statistics from the Mets’ recent magical run.

  1. Bryce Harper remains hitless (0-for-20) in his career against Matt Harvey.
  2. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Mets six run seventh inning rally to win was the first time since 2001 against the Orioles that they’ve rallied back from a six run or great deficit in the 7th inning or later.
  3. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the rally marked only the second time in the era of divisional play in which a first place team came back from a deficit of six or more runs to defeat a team that trailed them by five or fewer games in the standings in September or October.
  4. According to ESPN Stats & Info, through the first two games of this series against the Washington Nationals, the Nationals bullpen has a 14.21 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched.
  5. Last night, Tyler Clippard induced swing and misses on 4-of-8 fastball thrown, resulting in a 50% miss rate.
  6. During last night’s start, Matt Harvey was far too predictable throwing 21-of-26 first pitch fastballs (80.77%).  Harvey succeeds throwing approximately 50% first pitch fastballs and 50% first pitch off-speed pitches, also known as pitching backwards.  This approach helps Harvey stay unpredictable, allowing more first pitch strikes, which is the catalyst to any MLB pitchers success.
  7. Since joining the Mets on July 28th, Clippard has allowed 3 earned runs in 22.1 innings pitched resulting in an 1.21 ERA.  His quality of contact is:  26.6% soft contact, 48.4% medium contact and 25.0% hard contact.  For comparison, FanGraphs defines “great pitching contact rating” as 22% soft contact, 55% medium contact and 23% hard contact.
  8. Every Mets fan is aware of Yoenis Cespedes 13 home runs since joining the Mets on August 1st but his hard contact is not limited to home runs.  During his time with the Mets, his quality of contact is:  17.5% soft contact, 44.2% medium contact and 38.3% hard contact.  For comparison, FanGraphs defines “excellent hitting contact rating” as 15% soft contact, 45% medium contact and 40% hard contact.  This high contact rating has allowed him to score a MLB leading 27 runs over the past 30 days.
  9. Over the last 30 days, 11 of the 12 Mets hitters with over 49 at-bats during that span is batting over .250 and all of them have an OPS above .700.  Juan Uribe is batting .209 in 67 at-bats.  Lucas Duda did not register, having only 19 at-bats due to injury.  Championship teams have no gaps in their lineup, helping to manufacture runs rather than rely on home runs.
  10. Curtis Granderson has been doing his job seeing pitches and getting on base as the Mets lead-off hitter.  Over the last 30 days, Granderson is 5th in MLB with 19 walks and a .900 OPS.

Jacob deGrom takes the mound against Stephen Strasburg tonight at 7:05 PM as the Mets go for a sweep of the Nationals.
