The season ended about three weeks ago and now that we’ve had some time to reflect, it’s time to start handing out grades. This morning, we’ll begin with the starting pitching. The starting pitching exceeded expectations this year. I don’t think anyone thought that Jon Niese or R.A. Dickey would be as dominant as they were this year. We were also very unsure about how Chris Young and Johan Santana would hold up. Both contributed […]
For the most part, Mets fans were pleasantly surprised with the production of the Mets pitching staff in 2012. The bullpen kept us on the edge of our seats the majority of the season, but the starters were one of the bright spots for the Mets. None shone brighter than the ace of the staff, RA Dickey. Some injuries prevented the Mets starting rotation from reaching its full potential, but when all the starters […]
Sandy Alderson announced at a press conference yesterday that Johan Santana has been placed on the 15-day Disabled List with inflammation in his lower back retroactive to August 18. Alderson also said that he does not expect Santana to pitch again this season, but said he would be ready for Spring Training. You never want to see this happen to your ace, or any of your starting pitchers. Back injuries often linger, especially with pitchers. However, there […]
Despite four consecutive years of bad baseball, I think most of us can agree that some things are more frustrating than losses. What I’m talking about is insult to injury. Its having your fandom dragged through the proverbial mud as a result of not just the team’s performance on the field, but their disastrous attempt at public relations off of it. Some highlights of the franchise’s ineptitude in recent years… There was Omar Minaya’s claim […]
During last night’s ESPN telecast of the Mets victory over the Braves, the announcers mentioned that the Mets have several “building blocks” but also several “question marks.” At this point, the question marks far outweigh the building blocks, which is why the team has had moments of mediocrity this season. There is still a month and half to play, but barring a miracle, the Mets would be wise to start turning their focus to next […]
With the decline of 2012 New York Mets, many fans have rightfully reset their sights on what the future holds. Even prior to the trade deadline, when there was still an outside chance of the team turning its free fall around, some fans sought additions for next season, 2014 and beyond. The notion is sound, but there are multiple situations impeding such moves. First and foremost, much of the team’s young, previously trade worthy talent, […]
Its hard to fathom now, but the Mets had a realistic shot at the playoffs only one month ago. Since then the team has taken a turn for the worst with a lot of poorly played baseball compounded by additional injuries. In the process, the current situation has re-highlighted some glaring issues that the team’s successful first half had given us the luxury of forgetting about. First and foremost, the team’s pitching staff desperately needs […]
As I read Terry Collins’ and Sandy Alderson’s quotes in the paper this morning regarding Johan Santana going on the disabled list, my nostrils began to flair, my face was turning red, I almost scalded myself with the cup of hot coffee that was shaking in my hand, and I finally ran to get some blood pressure medication. I’m not angry that Johan Santana is being placed on the DL. That’s just incredibly sad and […]
It’s all fun and games until the Mets find themselves a half a dozen games back in the division and fading. That’s certainly how it feels today as the Mets limp into DC with their season on the ropes. With six games against the NL East leading Washington Nationals over the next nine days, the Mets have to opportunity to claw their way back into the fight for the division, however it may be time […]
