Daniel Murphy Could Be The New Lou Gehrig
Disclaimer: I’m not talking statistically, but the story is the same. Erudite baseball fans know Wally Pipp as the possessor of the most famous headache in baseball history. In his own words, “the most expensive asprins in history.” On June 2, 1925, Pipp told Yankee manager Miller Huggins he needed to sit that day out… …Rookie Lou Gehrig took his place, Pipp lost the job he had held since 1915 and at season’s end was [...]

Mets Exercise Option On Pelfrey And Some Thoughts
There was a flurry of minor moves yesterday regarding the Mets, as the free agent filing period continues to move forward. Former Mets who have officially filed now include Brian Schneider, Carlos Delgado, Alex Cora and Ramon Martinez. I believe that out of that group, at least one of them stands a good chance of returning next season. Delgado and Schneider will both be playing for new teams next season. Schneider has his sights set [...]

Hideki Matsui To The Mets? Just Say No!
In Newsday, David Lennon posted an interesting article about the possibility of Godzilla coming ashore in Flushing next season. I hope Omar Minaya doesn’t read that article. We don’t need him to get inspired by it. The Mets need a power hitter who can play left field or first base. Hideki Matsui hit 28 HR for the Yankees in only 456 at-bats, but almost every one of his at-bats came as a designated hitter, as [...]

It’s Going to Take a Few Moves
We can debate all day and year long whether or not the Mets’ awful season is the fault of Jerry Manuel, Omar Minaya, the Wilpons, or the Injuries, or a combination of all of them. But there is one thing I want to see happen this off-season. Omar needs to make more than one big move this time to improve the club. Two years ago he pulled the trigger on bringing in Johan Santana, and [...]

Carlos Delgado Likely Done For The Season
After suffering yet another setback with his hip injury, Carlos Delgado will most likely miss the remainder of the season. Delgado told reporters that there is inflammation in his hip following some running last Saturday. The Mets first baseman had right hip surgery on May 19 and was originally expected to return in early August, but suffered a string of one setback after another. “I’m a player. I like to play,” Delgado said. “You want to see your hard [...]

The New York Mets All-Time 9
On 9/9/09, Major League Baseball announced a fan poll contest, called the All-Time 9. What that means is that fans can go to official website of their favorite teams and vote for the best single seasons at a position in team history, with the goal of putting together an all-time lineup. After a quick jaunt to the Mets page, I found quite a nice list of memorable single season stats, some positions deeper than others. [...]

Daniel Murphy To The Minors In 2010?
Jon Heyman of SI.com mentioned something over the weekend regarding Mets first baseman Daniel Murphy that caught my attention. While reporting that Carlos Delgado may still attempt to comeback this season, if only for just one or two weeks, he also throws this in, The Mets have thought about possibly bringing back Delgado on an incentive-laden deal, according to sources. While Daniel Murphy is showing signs of power in recent days, the Mets also haven’t ruled out [...]

Bring Nick Johnson to Citi Field
A few weeks back I wrote a column and I briefly mentioned the fact that I believe Nick Johnson would be a great fit for the Mets in 2010. I’m going to take that further today. Assume for a second that everybody’s fantasy of acquiring Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez is not going to happen. Even if it does happen, the price tag for both of them will be astronomical. To me that leaves the [...]

The Case To Bring Back Carlos Delgado
At the start of the season it appeared that 2009 would most definitely be Carlos Delgado’s last season in the Big Apple. Well as we wrap of the final month of the season, Delgado appears to be as good as gone, especially after missing a majority of the season after undergoing hip surgery. However, the idea of bringing back Delgado to the Mets organization has to at least be considered. When looking at the upcoming [...]
