It was great to see Cardinals right fielder and former Met Carlos Beltran receive a warm welcome and a hearty round of cheers last night from the crowd at Citi Field. Before the game, Beltran spoke to reporters about his future and said he hopes to continue performing at this level for another three years. He feels great and has been one of the most productive outfielders in the game this season and had avoided […]
Well the 2013 All-Star Game has come to a close as the American League defeated the National League by the score of 3-0. It was the lowest-scoring All-Star Game since 1990, when the AL earned a 2-0 victory. I loved the Opening Ceremonies and it was great to see Carlos Beltran and Mariano Rivera get some nice ovations, but not nearly as loud and boisterous as the ovations for the Mets All-Stars David Wright and Matt […]
David Wright told reporters Carlos Beltran was under-appreciated when he was with the Mets before last night’s home run derby… “He had a couple of monster seasons for us, and was a huge reason why we made it as far as we did in 2006,” Wright said of his former teammate. ”We came a couple runs from making the World Series, and we don’t get close to that without Carlos. So hopefully his reception from the […]
After David Wright and Robinson Cano announced their Home Run Derby teams last night, I was about to post on it, but held off. I was hoping that Wright would explain his rationale in selecting his team and was happy to see that he did. The more I looked at Wright’s choices, the more I wondered what he possibly was thinking about his decision to go with Bryce Harper and Michael Cuddyer over some other […]
Andy Martino of the Daily News weighs in on the problem with hype, projection, unrealised expectations, and something about Mike Pelfrey being the devil. It is dehumanizing, what happens to phenoms like Zack Wheeler over the long arc of a professional baseball career. In the minor leagues, you are an abstraction, a blank screen onto which fans and media project hopes that have little to do with who you actually are. Then you arrive in […]
Ken Davidoff of the NY Post ranked his Top 5 All-Time MLB Underachievers and listed the 2006-2008 Mets second behind the 1980s Expos. About why he chose the Mets, he writes: 2000s Mets. Carlos Beltran would be a Hall of Famer if he retired today. David Wright is on a Cooperstown track. Carlos Delgado probably will miss out, but he has 473 homers on his resume. Jose Reyes will go down as one of the […]
Zack Wheeler did not throw his bullpen session on Thursday and instead spent the day working with Dan Warthen on altering his delivery so as not to tip his pitches as he was during his start against the White Sox. Regarding the changes they are looking to make, Warthen told ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin: “Open up his glove, keep it at the waist — kind of what we’ve done with [Jeremy] Hefner, kind of […]
The Mets plan to temporarily demote Zack Wheeler to the minors after tonight’s start, then officially re-promote him Tuesday for his next scheduled start at the Chicago White Sox, according to ESPN New York. Because Wheeler is technically the Mets’ 26th player for today’s doubleheader, they can demote him after today’s game without the requirement he spend 10 days in the minors before returning applying. No option will be burned by Wheeler’s procedural, temporary minor league […]
Bill Madden of the Daily News with the sobering reality most Met fans probably don’t want to hear: There were 21,747 gluttons for punishment at Citi Field Sunday for the conclusion of another Mets-Marlins series, which now qualify for the worst baseball on the planet. Not satisfied with having tortured their fans for 20 innings of record-tying ineptitude the day before, the Mets lost in similar fashion — just not so long in doing it […]
