If Carlos Beltran Can Do It, So Can Johan Santana
The Mets have announced that Johan Santana will not break camp with the Mets when the team heads north next weekend. Santana has still not been able to pitch off a mound and only today will begin long-tossing, albeit from a distance of just 90 feet. As much as I would like to see Santana tantalize hitters at Citi Field with his signature change-up, I wouldn’t mind if he took a little extra time before [...]

Johan Santana and the Mets Have Reached a Crossroad
Terry Collins told Jorge Castillo of the Star Ledger that Johan Santana is on target to start his first spring training game on March 10 or 11. That would give him about five starts, assuming there are no other setbacks, before Opening Day. Frankly, I don’t care if he’s starting Opening Day. I just want him to get fully healthy as soon as possible, even if that means missing a few starts early in the [...]

Beltran Says Collins Deserves Big Assist For Wheeler Trade
I read a great article last night from David Lennon of Newsday, that I believe most of you will enjoy. Lennon got together with Carlos Beltran after the Mets lost to the Cardinals, and the former Mets center fielder looked back fondly at his time with the Mets and talked about his first years with the team when he helped David Wright adjust to the big leagues. But what I found most fascinating was what [...]

Giancarlo Stanton Blockbuster Trade With NY Mets in the Works?
Let me get this out of the way first, I give full credit to RotoExperts for the dramatic title. It looked way too seductive to me and I felt it would be a cardinal sin to mess with it or alter it in any way. But lets get to the sirloin… Apparently they’ve been given some hot information from a top Sports Agency and I’m warning you right now that you might want to sit down as [...]

Taking 2013 Optimism To The Bronx
I love the air of optimism that occurs this time of year. Over the last few days we’ve seen a slew of MMO writers share their optimistic predictions for 2013, all sharing the same tone “Why not us?” In truth, the question is fair. Last year, nobody saw Oakland coming. The year prior, Arizona caught the league off guard and took the division from the 2010 World champion Giants. The last two years have had [...]

Mets Sign Ryhne Hughes To Minors Deal, Backman Concerned About Sin City
February 23 – The Mets have announced they’ve signed first baseman Rhyne Hughes to a minor league contract and that he will report to minor league camp. Hughes, 29, played 75 games for Double-A Bowie in the Baltimore Orioles system last season. The left-handed hitting Hughes batted .278/.370 OBP/.504 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs and 51 RBI in 313 plate appearances. His only sip of coffee in the majors came in 2010 when he batted .213 in 14 [...]

Mets Matters: What About “That” Guy?
For better or worse, Michael Bourn fell off the New York Mets radar Monday when he agreed to a four-year, $48 million deal with the Cleveland Indians. Mets/MLB beat writer Anthony DiComo suggests, if history is any indication, Sandy Alderson committed an error. DiComo wrote: The 11th overall Draft pick has a bizarre history of busts relative to the picks around it. Of the 48 players in history taken 11th overall, only five have amassed [...]

MMO Flashback: Mets Were Never Known For Having Strong Outfields
This article which was originally published on January 25th by Mitch Petanick, is worth a second look in light of recent events. Mark Simon did a piece on ESPN New York yesterday which ranked the top five infields in the team’s history, as well as the top five outfields. His rankings were pretty solid, although he had the 1999 Mets outfield ranked as No. 5 snubbing a very solid 2006 outfield. Let’s be honest, 2006 was [...]

Remember When We Were MetsMerized In 2006?
Man, 2006 feels like so long ago now. That season was the most exciting one I have witnessed since the World Series run in 2000. The Mets were a juggernaut. We had swagger, power, pitching, speed. We had a attitude and everyone hated us, especially when Reyes, Delgado, and others would dance on the field. Remember the slogan? “The Team. The Time. The Mets.” Remember how much we loved Willie Randolph? We thought he was [...]

The New York Mets – On The Fringe Of History
Thursday – October 19th – 2006 Top of the 9th and the score is 3 to 1 in favor of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets are one loss away from post-season elimination. The St. Louis Cardinals are one win away from the World Series. Cliff Floyd has struck out with runners on first and second. Jose Reyes has just lined out to Jim Edmonds in center. Hope is rapidly fading when Carlos Beltran makes [...]

I’ll Always Love Carlos Beltran, But…
Recently, Brian Joura at mets360.com posted an interesting piece on whether Carlos Beltran would wear a Mets hat when elected to the Hall of Fame. The thing that struck me the most about the title was the word “when”. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Carlos Beltran and was hoping the Mets would re-sign him to an incentive-laden short-term contract, but at the same time, I am a realist. I knew the Mets would [...]
