Johan Santana: He Coulda Been A Contender…

Everybody has a breaking point, and even though Johan Santana has not reached his, I’m thinking that a couple of more devastating losses like last night, and Johan will be singing a different tune. After the game, Santana may have revealed his frustration with the bullpen when he made this comment, “I can only do so much. I told pitching coach Dan Warthen that I felt I can go 150, 200 pitches if I [...]

MLB Draft Preview: Infielders

Thank you all for you wonderful comments. To read part one of the series, highlighting Right-Handed pitchers, go here. To read about the Left-Handed pitchers, go here. And yesterday’s column looked at the Outfielders. Today, we’ll see the prominent infielders. And when I say infielders, I’m including catchers. If you have been reading mock drafts, you’ve seen the names Zach Cox and Yasmani Grandal come up often. Infield is an interesting position grouping. The first [...]

Instant Replay Now Needed More Than Ever In MLB

While there’s no need to reiterate the botched call by first base umpire Jim Joyce in yesterday’s should-have-been perfect game by Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga, I will.  One out away from a pitcher’s ultimate personal feat, Galarraga allowed an infield hit to Indians short stop Jason Donald.  A scene that will run through the minds of players, fans and media for a long, long time.  Especially, Armando Galarraga’s.  It was a close call at first [...]

Mets Bullpen Stinks – What To Do?

Frankie Rodriguez, Pedro Feliciano, Jenrry Mejia, Elmer Dessens, Raul Valdez, Fernando Nieve, Ryota Igarashi, and Oliver Perez. There you have it – The current Mets bullpen from top to bottom, best to worst.  It flat out stinks. In April it was near the top of the National League.  A month later, I can’t imagine a worse staff.  Other than K-Rod and Feliciano, it is a bunch of rookies, journeymen and castoffs.  Perez is in a [...]

Another Crushing Defeat, Another Epic Fail, Another Stunning Loss

How much more of this can we take? Once again, Mets fans had to endure another agonizing, gut wrenching, heartbreaking loss. How can these types of losses continue to plague this team time and time again? The Mets have made losing in stunning fashion an art form… This one hurts so much on so many levels. Only five games ago, we watched in shock as the Mets wasted an absolute gem by Johan Santana, losing 2-0 to the [...]

6/2 Minor League Report! HAVENS, MARTE!

AAA International League: Buffalo 3/6/2, Syracuse 6/5/1 Daniel Murphy left the game in the 7th inning after a dirty take out slide on a DP by Syracuse’s Leonard Davis. Josh Thole also left the game in the first after being clocked in the head by a backswing. He’ll sit out tomorrow against some no name pitcher (Steven Strasburg or something…I’ve never heard of him). cf Jesus Feliciano 0 for 4, K, .386 ss, 2b Justin [...]

Sorting Out The Mets Bullpen

My name is John Delcos and this is the first of many posts for Mets Merized Online. Some of you may remember me from my days as the Mets beat writer for The Journal News. I have since started my own NY Mets project entitled the John Delcos New York Mets Report. Me and Joe D. will now be working together to bring our readers even more relevant team news and improved content on the New [...]

Mikey J’s Trip to Miller Park

Let me start out by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the game in Milwaukee on Sunday, in which the Mets salvaged a game and avoided a sweep to a team that previously had a horrible home record.  We recently moved to Madison and a friend with Brewers season tickets invited my wife, 2-year old son and I to the game.  In addition to the outcome being awesome, there were several other observations I [...]

Ollie, Ollie, Oxen Free???

I may be a day late and a dollar short (it’s been a crazy week for me) but I couldn’t resist weighing in on the Oliver Perez story anymore.  And so, this is my message to him: Dear Mr. Perez, I used to be your fan.  But now, I can’t stomach you.  You can’t pitch your way out of a paper bag.  What gives you the audacity to decline a minor league assignment?  No one [...]

Bringing Back Ty Wigginton and Adding Kevin Millwood

According to Dan Martin of the New York Post, righthander Kevin Millwood and super utility man Ty Wigginton are open to playing for the Mets if the Orioles become sellers between now and the trade deadline. Martin says that despite his 0-5 record, the 35-year-old Millwood has pitched well in his first season with Baltimore. He currently has a 3.89 ERA this season with a 1.27 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. “I wouldn’t mind pitching [...]

MLB Draft Preview: Outfielders

Yesterday we featured the Left-Handed Pitchers available in the 2010 MLB Draft, and Monday was the talented pool of Righties. Today, we’ll look at the outfielders. Bryce Brentz: Bryce is one of the best bats in this class. He will end up as a corner outfielder. He’s played some center, but he’ll likely be a permanent corner. But if you draft Brentz, you’re not looking at his defense. Brentz packs power. the junior from Middle [...]
