Manager Luis Rojas said there has been no serious discussions about Yoenis Cespedes playing first base this season. Instead Cespedes  just wanted to be involved and show he can do different things. Rojas also said that he uses one of Pete Alonso’s gloves.

One of the most exciting prospects of the upcoming season is the chance to see Yoenis Cespedes and his potent bat back in the lineup once again. While Cespedes is prime to take plenty of at-bats as the team’s designated hitter, that may not be the only position he plays this year.

Cespedes has been taking flyballs in the outfield as always, but on Wednesday he was also seen working out at first base. Newsday’s Tim Healey took a video from Citi Field this morning of Cespedes taking some grounders in the infield.

This is not the first time that we have seen Cespedes take some grounders at first base, as the idea of him playing the position has come up in the past.

There would obviously be a lot less stress put on the 34-year-old’s legs playing first as opposed to running around the outfield in left. When the idea of him playing first was originally tossed around though, there was no DH spot for Cespedes in a National League lineup.

Pete Alonso, Dominic Smith and Matt Adams are just some of the natural first basemen that figure to be ahead of Cespedes on the depth chart, especially since he can just DH. Still, it is good for Cespedes to have that flexibility for manager Luis Rojas.
