The Mets announced on Thursday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes underwent season-ending surgery on his ankle at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen told the media on Monday that Cespedes fractured his ankle after stepping in a hole on his ranch in Florida.
Cespedes will now enter the 2020 having played only 119 games in the previous three seasons after signing a four-year, $110 deal. Next season is his last of the deal, the Mets will pay him $29.5 million.
Cespedes was on the injured list at the time of the injury as he worked his way back from heel surgery on both feet. The Mets do have insurance on the entirety of Cespedes’ deal though the exact percentage is not known.
