USP MLB: MIAMI MARLINS AT NEW YORK METS S BBN USA NY

During the 2015-16 offseason, the Mets inked their stud outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a 3-year, $75 million contract with an opt-out after the first year.

In a weak class where Cespedes is easily the most appealing name on the open market, the outfielder exercised the opt-out and became a free agent today. The Mets will give the slugger a qualifying offer which he will obviously turn down in favor of a long-term deal on the open market.

Since coming over to Queens in a deadline deal in 2015 that sent Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa to the Detroit Tigers, Cespedes has been nothing short of a superstar.

In 189 games as a Met, Cespedes has clubbed 48 homers, driven in 130 runs and hit to a .282/.348/.554 clip.

Cespedes carried the team on his back and lead the Mets to a National League pennant in 2015 and appeared as an all-star in 2016.

Arguably one of the best trades the Mets have made in their history, Cespedes’ career with the Amazin’s might be coming to a close as the 31-year-old is expected to get a four or five year deal that he has desired.
