yoenis cespedes out

New York Mets star outfielder, Yoenis Cespedes has been scuffling at the plate as of late. Cespedes went 0-for-7 with a walk during the team’s doubleheader in which they were swept by Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

“I’m a little bit lost at the plate right now, but my hip is not affecting me,” Cespedes said through an interpreter. (ESPN)

Over his last seven games, Cespedes is hitting to a slash of .143/.174/.190. After a hot start to the season where he again carried the offense at times he has begun to cool off. In an offense that relies on homers to win games, Cespedes is its biggest catalyst as he leads the team with 15. Yo though advised that he is not feeling the pressure to carry this team as the rest of the offense struggles as well.

“No, I’m not Superman,” Cespedes said.

That may be true, but seeing him struggle at a time when everyone else is as well has been tough for what has been an anemic Mets offense. This team ranks 13th in the National league in runs scored with 207, only ahead of Philadelphia and Atlanta respectively. Cespedes believes the only way the Mets seem to be able to score runs right now is by way of the homer, as no one else is doing anything in front of him.

“If the guys ahead of me and the guys behind me can’t get on base, it doesn’t really do anything for me to just be on there on my own,” Cespedes said. “I’d have to hit home runs every time.”

It was natural that Cespedes would again come down to Earth just as he did in 2015. He was on a torrid pace yet again and he was bound to hit a lull at some point in the season. Overall on the year he is hitting to a .266/.340/.571 slash line. To go along with the 15 homers, he has 37 RBI. He is currently on pace to hit to a slash of .261/.321/.505, while mashing 34 homers with 95 RBI.
