Marc Carig of the Athletic reports that the New York Yankees have recently inquired about starting pitcher Zack Wheeler from the New York Mets.

The Yankees have reportedly shown interest in acquiring Mets starters Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard though neither of them are likely to get traded at the moment.

Yankees are shifting their focus to Wheeler in what is looking like a weak trade market for starting pitching.

Wheeler, 28, is 2-6 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 99.2 innings this season. He does have a 3.71 FIP for the season and a 0.9 HR/9 rate that ranks 17th among 83 qualified starters.

The right-hander has been better of late with a 3.44 ERA and 3.39 FIP over his last eight starts and has also seen a velocity boost on his fastball.

Jon Heyman of FanCred was on WFAN today, saying that a trade between the Mets and Yankees for Wheeler is unlikely. Though, if a deal did happen that the Mets could get a top 200 prospect for Wheeler or someone like infielder Brandon Drury.
