David Wright went 2-for-2 with a run scored and reached base four times during Wednesday night’s 5-2 win for St. Lucie over the Clearwater Threshers.
“I feel good,” Wright said. “I DH’ed today and it was more of trying to get some at-bats before I head out. I ended up getting around 30 at-bats, so hopefully I’m ready to go.”
Wright has gotten on base and scored at least one run in all six games he’s played since beginning his rehab assignment.
“Obviously major league pitching is different than what we have here, but I have felt good,” he said. “I couldn’t have hoped for better results during my rehab.”
While Wright has been gone, Mets’ third basemen have hit .302 and he was asked about it..
“Those guys have been fantastic,” Wright said. “They’ve done a tremendous job. Hopefully I can continue that momentum. By no means do I want to come back and be a distraction or hurt those guys. Hopefully I can come back and start where I left off here.”
Overall, Wright is hitting .476 (10-for-21) during his rehab, and is expected to return to the Mets tomorrow night in Florida for a weekend series with the Marlins.
In 146 at-bats with the Mets this season, he was batting .226 with six home runs and 18 RBI. Wright will now be expected to step up in a huge way and shoulder most of the offensive load that Beltran was providing once he’s traded. The pressure will be on and it will be interesting to see how he responds to that.
