As reported by MMN‘s Jacob Resnick, the New York Mets have designated Stephen Nogosek for assignment to make room for Rick Porcello on the 40 man roster. Nogosek, 24, had been acquired by the Mets in the Addison Reed trade with the Boston Red Sox.

Nogosek is the only player remaining with the Mets organization from that trade. Jamie Callahan had been released after he had dealt with shoulder problems. Gerson Bautista was part of the package sent to the Seattle Mariners in the trade which brought Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the Mets.

Nogosek, 24, would make his Major League debut last season. In seven appearances for the Mets, he was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA, 2.100 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, and an 8.1 K/9. Nogosek had allowed at least one run in five of his seven appearances, and he would only have two appearances where he would only face the minimum.

Nogosek had earned his way to the majors because he had solved some of the control issues which had plagued him in his minor league career. In fact, the 3.7 BB/9 he had with Triple-A Syracuse was better than the 6.7 mark he posted in 2018, and it was better than the 4.7 mark he had over his entire minor league career.

Overall, Nogosek would make 35 appearances between Binghamton and Syracuse. He would be 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA, 0.993 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9, and an 8.9 K/9. While he did make positive strides forward, his and Syracuse’s season would come to a bitter end.

Nogosek was one of four Syracuse relievers who combined to allow nine runs over the final three innings as the team blew 6-0 and 13-6 leads in the International League North Division tie-breaker game. Nogosek really struggled allowing four earned on one hit and two walks in an inning pitched.

If Nogosek is claimed by another organization, he must be added to that team’s 40 man roster. If he passes through waivers, as can be reasonably anticipated, the Mets will have the option to outright him to the minors or release him. With Nogosek not having a year of Major League service time, he cannot reject the outright assignment.
