It appears as if Wilmer Flores is going to continue to get the nod at first base through the end of the season, at least.

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway spoke with the press before Tuesday night’s game against the Giants and pretty much laid it all out there with regards to Flores (quotes via Tim Healey, Newsday).

“We’re in a spot right now where he has to start every day, and we could be in that spot again next year.”

“He’s still — at this point, you can see it — still trying to get used to starting,” Callaway continued. “So this is an opportune time to get him extended periods of playing time because you never know what’s going to happen next year.”

Flores, 27, is hitting .275/.326/.444 in 331 at-bats this season, with eleven home runs, 47 runs batted in, and a 114 OPS+, which would be a career-high for the Venezuelan native.

In the month of August, Flores is slashing .305/.344/.439 with 13 RBI in 82 at-bats (20 games).
