In case you missed it, Yoenis Cespedes isn’t the only Mets player with new walk-up music. Wilmer Flores has a new selection too, opting for the Friends theme song “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts.
No, this isn’t Flores’ clever way of reminding everyone of the yeoman’s job he has done helping the Mets and stepping in after season ending injuries suffered by David Wright, Lucas Duda, and most recently, Neil Walker.
No, as Marc Carig of Newsday reports, Flores chose the song because he “feels a connection to the show.” The connection stems from his teenage years when he was signed out of Venezuela. The then 16-year old Met prospect watched Friends to help him learn the English language.
The show helped Flores adapt to the U.S. culture and quickly learn the language. “It’s all about adjusting to where you are, and I did it. It’s like playing baseball. You’ve got to adjust to what they’re doing to you. If I wanted to be here, I had to speak English.”
With that, Flores slowly felt his home sickness fade away as he embraced his new country and all it had to offer. He wasn’t calling home or telling Tony Bernazard how much he wanted to go home. He would be in it for the long haul. It’s why the show is still important to him, still watching it on either Netflix or Nick at Nite.
To this day, Flores isn’t sure how he started watching Friends, but like most boys his age, he was a fan of Rachel. Unfortunately, we still don’t know what Flores’ feelings are about Joey and his vicious and unfounded attack attack on the Mets:
