wilmer flores

During yesterday’s 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins, Wilmer Flores had his first MLB appearance at 1st base. He played the position flawlessly and without any errors and even executed some nice plays while doing so that had a high degree of difficulty.

Flores showed great range at the position and a nice glove, making a nice diving stop to save a single from getting through in a game when runs were hard to come by.

He showed some solid instincts for the position as well by executing a beautiful 3-6-3 double play in the third inning. Terry Collins was pleased what he saw from his new super utility man.

“It means a lot,” Collins said. “It’s nice to have a guy that you can have some flexibility with and that can bounce around the infield.  It was a good game for Flo.” (NJ Advanced Media)

Flores, who possibly benefited from the one on one tutelage of working with Keith Hernandez during spring training, has shown he is quite capable of handling the position. We should see Flores get more time at first, especially if he begins to hit in a consistent manner against lefties. Flores went 1-for-3 on the day with a single and run scored, igniting the two-run seventh inning with his leadoff hit.
