crows empty citi field

Despite both the Yankees and Mets being equidistant from a wild card, and basically in the same boat, the difference between the vibe and feel at both home ballparks is very stark. Yankee Stadium is still vibrant, fun and exciting, while over at Citi Field fewer than 10,000 bodies a night and literally no atmosphere according to Andy Martino of the Daily News.

Martino says even the Mets team is lifeless, pointing out the lack of emotion when their one and only All Star Daniel Murphy was plunked by the Nats and had to leave the game.

It wouldn’t have been the worst thing for the Mets to bark for a moment, and take a few steps out onto the field, just to show they were alive. But this team is way past the moment where it feels much of anything.”

He also took aim at the segment of fans known better as Mets Twitter for being so ecstatic after beating a bottom of the barrel team like the Colorado Rockies and imagining themselves being in a playoff chase and that the games at Citi were still relevant.

“The rest of us could spend fruitless years trying to understand the psychology of a Mets fan, at least the ones who speak loudest on social media. It goes something like this: We hate the team, we hate the front office, we hate the owners, we hate the manager. Wait, we won a few this week? We’re so excited, oh my god, we’re going to the playoffs, don’t you dare say anything bad about our Metsies.”

Martino says he’s not looking to be critical of them, but only wants to point out that the team and Citi Field is unworthy of their passion.

He concludes that while the Mets might be more exciting in 2015 because of their stable of young pitchers, the vibe he’s getting from baseball people is that the front office won’t spend much this winter and that could mean another September praying for 80 wins.
