Per Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News, Zack Wheeler threw a live BP session today. Batters were mostly just tracking his pitches, however an attending scout said he looked “really good.”
Wheeler, 26, threw 25-30 pitches and was very happy with his performance afterward.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com says will make his Grapefruit League debut on March 10th against the Atlanta Braves.
Original Report – Feb 27
James Wagner of the New York Times reports Zack Wheeler had a successful bullpen session on Sunday in what has been characterized as Wheeler’s first “full effort bullpen” this Spring.
This news is all the more heartening when you consider Wheeler had discomfort after throwing his first bullpen session this Spring. With each successive bullpen session, it becomes more and more apparent Wheeler’s issues was, in fact, scar tissue and not the existence of a new injury.
If Wheeler continues having pain free bullpen sessions, he will be able to make his first Spring Training start on March 9th game against the Detroit Tigers.
Where Wheeler goes from there is still up in the air. The Mets organization has publicly considered using Wheeler in the bullpen, whereas Terry Collins has overtly stated he sees Wheeler as a starter.
Wheeler is competing this spring to reclaim his spot in the starting rotation. His main competition is Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo, both of whom pitched extremely well down the stretch last year as the Mets secured the Wild Card.
