On Thursday it was reported that Jason Bay or his agent Joe Urbon, would be making some sort an announcement, but that never happened.
It was also reported that the Mets would be in contact with the Bay camp on Friday, which has now come and gone. Ken Davidoff of Newsday said via Twitter that they never heard back from Bay.
As several beat writers pointed out this morning, with Milton Bradley now playing leftfield for the Seattle Mariners, it would seem the odds of landing Bay increased dramatically for the Mets. Adam Rubin writes,
The team is reluctant to drastically improve its offer of four years for about $65 million until team brass believes another team is in the running. “We’re still close to that,” a team insider said Friday night. “Everything’s pretty much the same.”
The mystery team…
Six days is a long time to remain anonymous, but that’s how long it’s been when word leaked out from the Bay camp that there was a mystery team involved that extended a five year deal. Secrets simply don’t last that long in today’s modern age so it seems apparent that there is no mystery team.
The Mets called their bluff, and right now they have the highest offer to Bay, the reported 4 year $65 million dollar deal. In fact it is the only offer Bay has, despite Urbon’s best attempts to make it seem otherwise..
So now what….
So what exactly is Jason Bay waiting for?
The market is what it is…
Buster Olney of ESPN said yesterday morning that “the Mets could end up signing Jason Bay within the next 48 hours.”
And still no word?
It’s getting toward that moment when the Mets should simply tell Bay that he has 24 hours to accept the offer before the Mets withdraw it and move on to Plan B.
Oh and by the way… What is Plan B?
