Jacob deGrom endured the second shortest outing of his career in Saturday’s 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Miami Marlins. His velocity also dipped, causing question marks to raise if he again may be having some type of issue with his lat.

It was a night to forget for deGrom, who allowed fives runs in 3.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits while walking one and striking out five. The Marlins were just beating up on him in a very consistent manner. With the loss, his record dropped to 6-5 on the season, while his ERA had risen to 2.73.

Cause for concern came when deGrom’s fastball began topping off at around the 90-91 MPH mark. He though was not concerned with his velocity, chalking it up to workload from the night.

“It doesn’t help when you throw 30 pitches in an inning,” deGrom said. (NY Post)

Prior to the game though, manager Terry Collins admitted to the fact for the first time of the reasons for his lack of velocity earlier on in the season.

“He had a lat problem, and that was a major reason the fastball wasn’t what everybody thought it should be in spring training and early in the season,” Collins said.

“He had a tough time letting it go and getting extended on it, but as the season wore on and he feels better, the velocity has come up.”

This brings us to Saturday’s game where yet again velocity was the question to the 28 year-old deGrom. Hopefully for Jake and the Mets though this was nothing but an aberration on what was a night to forget.
