Taijuan Walker took the loss (his eleventh loss of the season) in one of his worst outings of the season on Wednesday as the Mets fell to the Red Sox 12-5 at Fenway Park. He gave up six earned runs on six hits, two walks, and two home runs, striking out just one over the course of two very long innings pitched. His record falls to 7-11 with a 4.57 ERA.

Walker’s first inning was more of a nightmare that he will want to forget as the Mets watch their playoff hopes continue to wash away. After striking out Enrique Hernandez to open the inning, Walker gave up a one-out solo home run to Kyle Schwarber on a 2-2 count to quickly put the Red Sox on top 1-0 over the Mets. He then walked Xander Bogaerts and gave up an RBI single to Rafael Devers that moved Bogaerts to third.

With runners on the corner, Walker gave up an RBI single to J.D. Martinez that scored Bogaerts and extended the Red Sox’s lead over the Mets to 2-0 in the first.

After a mound visit, Walker forced Alex Verdugo into a double play to end the inning, but not before the Red Sox had done some damage.

After the Mets got a run back in the top of the second, Walker’s nightmare continued as he negated the Mets’ runs and just continued to give up runs to the Red Sox. Hunter Renfroe led off with a double to left field. Vasquez lined out for the first out of the inning that moved Renfroe to third, but then a walk to Jose Iglesias put runners on the corners and immediately Walker was back in trouble.

Hernandez followed with an RBI double to left field that scored Renfroe to extend the Red Sox’s lead to 3-1. Then came the dangerous Schwarber who had already hit his first home run one inning prior. He had Walker’s number as he again homered, this time a big three-run home run to clear the bases and extend the Red Sox’s lead to 6-1 over the Mets in just the second inning of play.

After a mound visit, Walker grounded out Bogaerts and Devers to get out of the inning. That was Walker’s last inning of work. He was replaced on the mound in the third inning by Trevor Williams.

Williams’ outing was rough as well. He gave up six runs (four earned runs) on eight hits and a walk over the course of four innings of relief for the Mets as the Red Sox just continued to pour on the runs.

Three of the runs Williams gave up came in the third inning. He gave up an RBI double to Verdugo that scored Martinez and a triple to Iglesias that scored Verdugo. Iglesias also ended up scoring on a throwing error by Javier Baez.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Williams forced Devers into a double-play for two outs, but it came at the price of Schwarber scoring and extending the Red Sox’s lead to 10-1 in the fourth inning over the Mets.

Schwarber continued to pour on the runs scored in the sixth inning as Williams grounded out Verdugo, but Schwarber scored on the ground out to extend the Red Sox’s lead to 12-3 over the Mets.

That was the last inning of work for Williams. He was replaced on the mound by Jeurys Familia in the seventh for the Mets.

Walker, after a first half so good that earned him an All-Star appearance, now has a 7.74 ERA in his last 12 starts.
