Terry Collins joins Adam Rubin of ESPN in Port St. Lucie, Fla., as camp opens on a voluntary basis.

“It’s going to be an organized camp,” Collins said, looking ahead to when official workouts begin. “I really believe in running spring training by the clock more than anything so that guys are on the field, get their work done and get off the field so that they get ready for tomorrow. We’re very, very blessed here with a great complex.”

According to Collins, this years camp will have fewer players than usual and thus be much more focused. He expects to get a lot more done than in past camps because the groups will be smaller and easier to get the message across on fundamentals and playing the game right.

Minor leaguers Brad Holt, Scott Moviel and a few others have already shown up and begun training..

I like that the plan will be to give the players more repetitive drilling to help reinforce good habits and build some momentum as they move closer to opening day.

The smaller showing will also lead to more actual playing time for all the players which will help in evaluating them and making better roster decisions. Of course it also builds stamina and gets the players in game shape so as not to start the season rusty.
