Last night, left-hander Mark Cohoon recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed two unearned runs on five hits over seven innings as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-2.
“I had good control tonight,” Cohoon said. “I was able to command my fastball in to hitters and keep them honest at the plate. I was able to throw everything else on the other side of the plate.
Cohoon, 23, currently has a 0.47 ERA which ranks second in the Eastern League. He made headlines last season, when he tied a South Atlantic League record by pitching three straight shutouts and went on to be named the Mets’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 12-5 with a 2.57 ERA in 26 starts with the Sand Gnats and B-Mets.
Cohoon is part of a trio of Mets pitching prospects who are all off to great starts this season for Binghamton, the others being Brad Holt who has yet to allow an earned run in two starts, and Robert Carson who has an 0.90 ERA.
It’s too bad our major league staff hasn’t given us much to get excited about. But the good news is that real help is on the way, and Pelfrey, Niese and company better get their acts together quick..
Matt Harvey Named Player of the Week
Mets prospect RHP Matt Harvey, was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week today for the week of April 7-April 17.
In his first three professional starts, Harvey went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In 16.0 innings, he’s allowed one unearned run and notched 20 strikeouts.
Harvey was the Mets first round selection in the 2010 draft, but because he was late in coming to an agreement with the team, he didn’t make his professional debut until two weeks ago.
So far, this has been a very excellent start to Matt Harvey’s career as a Met. It’s pretty exciting to hear all the buzz surrounding Harvey from those who have seen him pitch.
