billy hamilton out

During today’s Mets’ 1-0 win over the Reds, starting catcher Juan Centeno became the first backstop to ever catch Billy Hamilton stealing in the majors.

After Hamilton legged out an infield single in the fifth inning, the 23-year old Centeno gunned a perfect throw to nail the speedster at second base.

Entering today’s action, Hamilton had 13 straight steals to begin his major league career. Last season, Hamilton stole 155 bases in the minors.

Centeno, who was making his second major league start, predicted Hamilton would try to steal and called for a fastball up and away from starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Hamilton took off on the first pitch and Centeno nailed him.

“Yesterday I was joking with the guys in the bullpen, ‘I’m going to get that guy tomorrow,’” Centeno said with a smile. “And then I got him.”

Centeno threw out 30 of 54 runners with Triple-A Las Vegas this season.
