Mets Celebrate

Limping through the All-Star break as a baseball fan is tough business.  We try many things to speed the time up and hope that the days off do more good for our team than bad.  Leading up to the break the Mets were playing some good ball.  I am sure I am not the only one that gets nervous that we could be on the brink of another slow start and back to the negativity.  Sometimes we stretch to find stories or something news worthy to write about, and this is going to be no different.

Bovada, which is an on-line gambling site, came out with updated odds on which team will represent their respective divisions in the fall classic.  There isn’t much surprise that the Mets odds aren’t favorable of winning it all, which in turn won’t see anyone put up their family nest egg.  But just how bad are their odds?

The last time the odds came out, the Mets were 100/1 to win the World Series.  After struggling for the remainder of the month of June, and despite a nice little run before the break, the odds actually got worse.  The site’s updated odds now have the Mets at 200/1 to win it all.  That doesn’t sound very promising.  Odds makers must not be Mets fans because they also have them at 100/1 to win the National League East.

People, other than all of us, have a fun time comparing how things are going in Flushing to the way things are going in the Bronx.  The Yankees are currently 47-47 and the Mets are 45-50.  Even with that, Bovada has the Yankees odds at winning yet another championship at 22/1.  According to the site, there are only 11 other teams that have better odds.  They also gave the Yankees 11/1 odds at taking the American League East.

I never put much stock into things like this, and I know that we can’t assume that we will be at the top of the power rankings after a nice 10-game stretch, but the difference between the two teams is a bit extreme.  If there is one thing I have learned it is this:

“If someone gives you 10,000/1 on anything, you take it.  If John Mellencamp ever wins an Oscar, I am going to be a very rich dude.” – Kevin Malone (The Office)
