New York Mets lefty Jason Vargas was back in spring camp today in Port St. Lucie only two days after having surgery on the hamate bone in his right-hand.

Mike Puma of the New York Post is reporting that that Vargas threw today with the return throw being handed to him and that the veteran is hopeful he will still make his first start.

Vargas was hit by a line drive on his glove hand last week in a minor league game and was immediately removed. He could possibly return to his throwing progression this weekend.

This spring Vargas has a 4.15 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 8.2 big league spring innings with nine strikeouts and four walks in that span.

Vargas signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Mets this offseason with the hope that he would prove to be an innings eater.

Noah Syndergaard is locked into Opening Day, Jacob deGrom in the second game then after that Matt Harvey and Steven Matz will be in the rotation as well. Zack Wheeler was on the outside looking in until the Vargas injury and could still lose the spot if he struggles tonight.

The Mets fifth game of the season takes place on April 3 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
