The Mets announced a re-configuring of their coaching staff on Monday, with the following moves:

  • Pat Roessler was dismissed as the hitting coach, and will not return to the organization in 2019
  • Ricky Bones was relieved from his duties as bullpen coach, and will be reassigned within the organization in 2019
  • Glen Sherlock moved from third base coach to first base coach
  • Gary DiSarcina shifted from bench coach to third base coach
  • Ruben Amaro Jr. is now an adviser in the front office

Those moves now leave the Mets without a bench coach and a first base coach. The moving of DiSarcina from bench coach to third base coach opens the door for the Mets to bring in a National League baseball oriented bench coach, to assist Callaway, who has spent his whole career prior to 2018 in the American League.

GM Brodie Van Wagenen told reporters that the team will look for an experienced bench coach to replace DiSarcina.

“Our goal is to try to give Mickey as much support as he can in the dugout & having someone that is an experienced bench coach that can help him with in-game management we thought would be a win for Mickey & help him with his development,” Van Wagenen said.

DiSarcina is entering his second year with the team, and Sherlock his entering his third. Amaro served one year on the staff, but will remain in the organization for his second season. Roessler spent four years with the organization, and Bones spent seven.

Van Wagenen also stated that his plan is for Jon Ricco, Omar Minaya, and JP Ricciardi to remain in the front office and join former manager Terry Collins and Amaro Jr. as advisers. The first three mentioned will help Van Wagenen in his search for a new bench coach, hitting coach, and bullpen coach.

MetsMerized Online thanks Bones and Roessler for their years of service to the Mets.
