If it’s one thing Mets’ general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has been notorious for in his tenure at the helm, it’s been trading high end prospects in an attempt to bolster the big league roster.

Well perhaps no more.

At the general manager meetings this past week, Van Wagenen said that he is inclined to hold on to his prospects this winter, unless he receives an offer he can’t refuse.

“We feel like we’re in a position where we can continue to hold those players unless there is an overwhelming deal that knocks our socks off,” Van Wagenen said, according to Tim Healey of Newsday. “We like our farm system. We feel like it continues to grow. We hope that will be the case in this year’s draft as well and the international markets, and then we’ll try to see if there’s any trades that exist from either prospects or 0-to-3 players off our roster, but right now it’s way too early to answer that.”

As Healey notes, 0-to-3 players are “major-leaguers who have fewer than three years of service time and have not reached arbitration yet.” These would include guys like J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith, who could be on the bubble going into 2020 as they aren’t locked in to any specific position.

Van Wagenen’s first move as general manager of the Mets last winter saw the team acquire veteran second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz in exchange for a package that included prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn. Prior to the trade deadline, Van Wagenen also acquired starter Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson.

The Cano and Diaz acquisitions flopped in 2019, while Stroman saw mixed success in his two months to end the season.

This year, Van Wagenen says he feels like he has a solid foundation and will continue to make moves as they seek a return to the postseason.

“We like our major-league roster right now,” he said. “And we’re only going to make moves from our prospect haul or from our major-league team if it pushes us farther along and accelerates our momentum from our 86 wins last year.”
