New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen spoke to the media today on the last day of the general manager’s meeting in Carlsbad, California.

While giving few specifics on his team due to ‘the early nature of the trade process’ he did comment about several areas of the Mets.

As an example he was pressed by the media on his catching situation and he responded by saying, “I think we are in a fortunate position that we don’t have to do anything in the catcher market.”

He was then asked about Travis d’Arnaud and although he said that d’Arnaud could be part of the solution, he became vague when it came to whether he’ll tender him. He did say he believes d’Aranud will be ready for opening day.

This could be considered a bit of posturing on the part of Van Wagenen as Jon Heyman reported earlier in the day that the Mets are asking other teams about catchers and that the opening day catcher may not as of today be on the Mets’ roster. Of course posturing is one of the ‘talents’ that a GM must possess and it appears that Van Wagenen can posture with the best.

Van Wagenen also hinted at more balance in the Met’s batting order going forward. He said, “we will look at the batting order when it comes to righty/lefty.” Important because the Mets were one of the worse teams in the league against left-handed pitching. Although little was mentioned about possible,  it is important to note that Manny Machado had a .921 OPS against left-handed pitching last season.

Van Wagenen was also asked the second base position. He spoke positively about Jeff McNeil as he had mentioned earlier that he is ‘penciled in as the Mets starting second baseman’. It appears unlikely that money would be spent on second base on a player like the Rockies’ DJ LeMahieu. Reports have surfaced, though, the Mets may possibly look at re-obtaining Asdrubal Cabrera.

Throughout the press conference, Van Wagenen’s demeanor was friendly, short on facts, and full of hope..

Earlier, Van Wagenen reiterated his desire to keep Jacob deGrom and sign him to a long term contract. “…I think he is tremendous and would love to try to keep him if possible.” Van Wagenen said, ” We’ll explore that in the coming weeks.”

DeGrom, who most likely win his first Cy Young award this year, is under team control through the 2020 season. No official talks between the parties has started and the Mets haven’t exchanged proposals with deGrom on a possible extension.
