The Mets have been playing short-handed the last few games with Tyrone Taylor suffering from a left hamstring sprain. The team decided before Tuesday’s game that Taylor’s injury wasn’t healing fast enough and placed him on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 30.

Taking his spot on the roster is Kevin Herget , who can return to the club due to injury. Brandon Waddell was also optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after pitching 4.1 scoreless innings against the Marlins on Sunday. The Mets announced that Jared Young has been recalled to take Waddell’s spot on the roster. Our very own Mike Mayer first reported earlier today that Young arrived in Detroit to join the team and that Waddell would be sent down.

While Young doesn’t provide the defensive prowess of Taylor, he brings the possibility of additional left-handed pop off the bench.

Young has struggled in his 19 games for the Mets this year, slashing .171/.222/.415, but he has raked in the minors, hitting to an OPS of .964 in Syracuse. Starling Marte has served as the team’s primary pinch hitter as of late, over players such as Ronny Mauricio, regardless of the handedness of the pitcher. If Young can find that same power he has had in the minors over this next stretch, he can end up taking some crucial at-bats against tough right-handed pitching late in games.

Jesse Winker Shut Down

Carlos Mendoza announced ahead of Tuesday’s game that Jesse Winker had been shut down from rehab and that his season was now over.

Winker was originally placed on the injured list on May 5 due to an oblique strain. He returned two months later but almost immediately went back on the IL with back inflammation. He tried to start his rehab back up last week but went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts.

The Mets signed Winker to a one-year, $7.5 million deal in the offseason after being an impact down the stretch in the 2024 season. He finishes the year with a .709 OPS and one home run over 81 plate appearances.
